Williams County, North Dakota

The first of two Williams counties located in the territory that would become North Dakota:

  • was formed in 1873,
    and
  • located south of the Missouri River – near the current North Dakota counties of Dunn and Mercer.

The second Williams County was organized on December 8-9, 1891 by the North Dakota state legislature and included both the current Williams and Divide counties.

In November, 1910, a successful vote was taken by the citizens of Williams County to separate into two counties:

  • Divide County to the north – on the border with Canada,
    and
  • Williams County to the south.

On December 8-9, 1910, the new Williams County was formed.

Williams County was named after Erastus Appelman Williams – a resident of Bismarck who served in both the territorial, and state legislatures.

Williams County is bordered on the north by Divide County, on the west by Montana, on the east by Mountrail County and Burke County, and on the south by McKenzie County.

2012 Per Capita Income

As of 2012, the per capita personal income of Williams County was $116,978.

2010 Population

As of the 2010 Census, the population of Williams County was 22,398.

County Seat – Williston

The city of Williston is the county seat, and the county’s largest city with a population of 16,006 as of the 2010 Census.

2000 Ancestry Composition

As of the 2000 Census, county residents had the following identified ancestral heritage:

  • 48.3% Norwegian;
    and
  • 22.0% German.

2013 Drilling Activities

As of November 30, 2013, there were 31 active drilling rigs operating in the county.
