Bottineau County, North Dakota

Bottineau County, North Dakota was organized by the Dakota Territory legislature on July 17, 1884, although it had been designated as one of the original territorial counties in 1872.

Bottineau County, North Dakota extends south from the Canadian border to McHenry County, Pierce County, and Renville County, and is bordered on the west by Renville County, and on the east by Rolette County.

Pierre Bottineau

Bottineau County is named for Pierre Bottineau – whose father was a French Canadian fur trader, and mother was a Dakota/Ojibway Indian.

Pierre Bottineau was a land surveyor, and was involved in the formation of many settlements across Minnesota and North Dakota.

As of 2012, the per capita personal income of Bottineau County was $68,656.

2010 Population

As of the 2010 Census, the population of Bottineau County, North Dakota was 7,149.

County Seat – Bottineau

The city of Bottineau is the county seat, and its largest city with a population of 2,215 as of the 2010 Census.

2000 Ancestry Composition

As of the 2000 Census, Bottineau County, North Dakota residents had the following identified ancestral heritage:

  • 44.4% Norwegian
  • 25.2% German,
    and
  • 5.4% French.
