Renville County, North Dakota

On July 15, 1910, Renville County and Burke County were partitioned out of Ward County, which had been established in 1885 by the Dakota Territory legislature.

Renville County, North Dakota extends south from the Canadian border to Ward County, and is bordered on the west by Burke County, and on the east by McHenry County and Bottineau County.

The County is named after Joseph Renville, a fur trader and Dakota Indian translator, whose father was a French Canadian fur trader, and mother was a Dakota Indian.

As of 2012, the per capita personal income of Renville County was $65,717.

2010 Population

As of the 2010 Census, the population of Renville County was 2,470.

County Seat – Mohall

The city of Mohall is the county seat for Renville County, and its largest city with a population of 783 as of the 2010 Census.

When it was organized in 1910, the citizens of Renville County preferred Mohall over city of Kenmare as the county seat.

Therefore, they arranged to have Kenmare remain in Ward County, located in a northern peninsula of land jutting out of the main portion of the county.

2000 Ancestry Composition

As of the 2000 Census, Renville County residents had the following identified ancestral heritage:

41.8% Norwegian
25.7% German, and
5.6% Irish.

As of November 30, 2013, there was one active drilling rig operating in Renville County.
