- on the north by Ward County, Mountrail County, and McHenry County,
- on the west by Dunn County, and Mountrail County,
- on the south by Mercer County, Oliver County, and Burleigh County, and
- on the east by Sheridan County, and Burleigh County.

McLean County, North Dakota was named for John A. McLean – the first mayor of Bismarck, North Dakota.
