Mountrail County, North Dakota

Mountrail County (originally Mountraille County) was established in 1873 by the Dakota Territory legislature – with boundaries extending from the Missouri River in the south, to the Canadian border on the north.

For a time, Mountraille County remained a county when North Dakota became a state in 1889.

However, in 1892, the county was eliminated, and its land incorporated within Ward County – named for Mark Ward – a member of the legislature.

On November 3, 1908, the citizens of Ward County voted on whether a new Mountrail County should be spun off from Ward County:

  • 4,207 county residents voted in favor of the move,
    and
  • 4,024 voted against.

North Dakota’s Attorney General thereafter tried to prevent the division of the County, claiming the vote to have been illegal.

However, in January, 1909, the Supreme Court affirmed the validity of the vote, and the new Mountrail County came into existence.
